Discover Sylvia's Restaurant

Sylvia's Restaurant on 328 Malcolm X Blvd, New York, NY 10027, is a place that feels like home for anyone seeking comfort food in a warm, inviting atmosphere. Known for its Southern soul food, Sylvia's has built a strong reputation over the years, drawing in both locals and visitors to the heart of Harlem. Whether you’re craving a hearty plate of fried chicken or want to try their famous cornbread, this restaurant offers something for everyone, no matter the occasion.

The first thing you’ll notice when you step into Sylvia's is the welcoming, cozy vibe. It’s not just a place to eat; it’s a community hub where people come together to enjoy good food and great company. The ambiance is casual yet filled with a sense of pride, which makes sense given the legacy of Sylvia Woods, the founder. Sylvia’s has been a staple in Harlem since 1962, and that long history is evident in every corner of the restaurant. You’ll find the walls adorned with photos, stories, and memorabilia that pay homage to its Southern roots and the people who have made it what it is today.

The menu at Sylvia’s is a true celebration of soul food. It’s packed with all the classics you'd expect, from tender fried chicken to slow-cooked collard greens. But the real stars are the dishes that have made Sylvia’s a household name. For instance, their fried chicken, often hailed as some of the best in New York, is crispy on the outside and perfectly juicy on the inside. It's served with a generous portion of mashed potatoes, gravy, and cornbread - a combination that feels like a warm hug.

Another must-try is Sylvia’s shrimp and grits. The shrimp is cooked to perfection, and the grits are creamy and flavorful, making for a satisfying dish that pairs perfectly with a side of cornbread. The sweet tea, a staple in Southern dining, is another highlight. It’s refreshingly sweet and the ideal drink to balance out the savory flavors of the meal. Sylvia’s also offers a range of other options, including catfish, barbecue ribs, and a variety of sides like macaroni and cheese, which has a gooey, cheesy texture that many rave about.

One of the reasons why Sylvia's Restaurant stands out among other eateries in New York is the level of care and tradition that goes into each dish. The recipes have been passed down through generations, ensuring that the flavors stay true to their Southern roots. Each meal is made with fresh ingredients, and you can taste the difference. The restaurant also focuses on hospitality, making sure that guests feel at home from the moment they walk through the door. The staff is friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu, offering recommendations based on your tastes.

When it comes to reviews, Sylvia’s consistently receives glowing feedback. Many diners praise not just the food but the experience of dining at a place with so much history. It’s often described as a culinary institution, and it’s easy to see why. It’s rare to find a restaurant that so seamlessly blends excellent food with a sense of community. Whether you’re enjoying a casual lunch or celebrating a special occasion, Sylvia’s has a way of making every meal feel significant.

The location of Sylvia's also adds to its charm. Situated in Harlem, it’s right in the heart of a neighborhood that’s rich with culture and history. The surrounding area offers a variety of other activities and attractions, making it the perfect stop before or after exploring the vibrant streets of Harlem. It’s not just about the food at Sylvia’s - it’s about the experience of being in a place that has been a part of Harlem’s story for so long.

With every visit, it’s clear that Sylvia's Restaurant isn’t just a place to grab a meal; it’s a part of the fabric of Harlem. Whether you’re a first-timer or a regular, it’s easy to see why this restaurant continues to thrive and hold a special place in the hearts of many. It’s more than just a diner - it’s an experience that offers a taste of Southern comfort and tradition with every bite.

  • Yes the food was good, BUT… Visiting my stepdaughter in New York for Thanksgiving 2025, She suggested Sylvia’s Soul food Restaurant in Harlem. We made reservations for 5, for 5pm. We got seated at 5:10pm. One person received their food around 6pm (she ate by herself). The 4 of us got our food at 6:36pm. OVER AN HOUR LATER. We were told that the one person at our table got their food first because they thought it was a single order. The waitress apologized but did not ask if we wanted to talk to the manager. So one of our guest asked the waitress if we can get a 10% discount due to the long wait. That’s when the waitress said we need to talk to the manager. The manager came and gave us 10% off. Also, the waitress never brought out the dessert until we asked for it (comes with the meal.) the sweet potato pie came out cold. HOWEVER, the food was really, really good. The greens were delicious, cornbread delicious. the cornbread stuffing was delicious. Yams, mac and cheese, Turkey… delicious. Our desserts— came at the end and we took it to go. We also saw another waitress with a visible irritated face. But we take it as she didn't want to work on Thanksgiving. Next time— she should take the day off. But Would I go back. Absolutely! The food was bomb! But I would go on a non-busy day. I don’t cancel until the second strike.

  • Best soul food we’ve ever had! We ordered the bbq ribs and fried chicken combo, and it came with two side dishes. The portion was very generous so we barely finished. The rum punch was good too. The cornbread was warm and crumbly, 10/10.

  • If you’re looking for soul food, this is it!!! No fuss no frills just an absolutely legendary meal. We had the chicken and waffles and their famous BBQ pork ribs- so delicious. The entrees each come with your choice of two sides, very generous with their portions. The CORNBREAD is the best I’ve ever had, and cornbread is definitely in my top 5 favorite sides. The service was genuine and amazing. Great spot, make the trip; you won’t be disappointed.

  • Walk about 30 minutes to enjoy the iconic restaurant of Harlem. It’s definitely worth the walk. The host and waitress were all very attentive and kindhearted. The cornbread was one of the best I’ve ever tasted. The fried chicken and waffles were also very impressive. I would love to visit again.

  • I visited Sylvia’s after seeing it featured on the YouTube series Worth It, and it absolutely lived up to the hype! The food is soul-warming and full of flavor. The fried chicken was perfectly crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside — easily some of the best I’ve had. The BBQ ribs were tender and coated with a delicious, tangy sauce. The collard greens had that comforting, slow-cooked depth of flavor, and the mashed potatoes were creamy and well seasoned. And of course, the cornbread was a highlight — warm, fluffy, and perfect with a little butter. The portions are generous, the presentation is inviting, and you can tell everything is made with care. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, with a classic Harlem charm. We sat in the covered outdoor section, which was comfortable and had a nice view of the neighborhood. Service was friendly and attentive, making the whole experience even better. If you’re in NYC and want true comfort food with history and heart, Sylvia’s is a must-visit. I’ll definitely be coming back.

  • Service with a smile was great! So was the hospitality. Our waitress was pretty busy so she wasn't able to give top notch service but our needs were met. The food... myuah! Delicious and down home. This will not be my last visit to Sylvia's. We met people from the US and those visiting from abroad. Don't skip Sylvia's!
